Drunk driver crashes into car at 100 miles per hour

Brent AdamsSeptember 25, 2007 10:13 AMA drunk driver with a blood alcohol content of .22 -almost three times the legal limit - crashed into the rear of another vehicle on I-95 in Benson, North Carolina, Saturday night, September 22.
The drunk driver was was speeding 100 miles per hour at the time of impact.
Four people were injured and went to the hospital as a result of the wreck. The collision occurred around 11:00 p.m. during Benson's Mule Days festivities.
The driver of the Ford pick up truck which rear ended the 1991 Honda in which the four victims were riding was Kenneth Atlas Talton, 25, of Pembroke Pines, Florida.
Mary Katherine Alexander, of Cary, North Carolina was the driver of the other vehicle.
According to North Carolina Highway Patrol Mr. Talton was driving in the center of the southbound lane of I-95 when he slammed into the rear of Ms. Alexander's Honda and knocked it into the median.
Three passengers were in Ms. Alexander's Honda. A minor was airlifted to Wake Medical Center and remains in the surgical intensive care unit. Ms. Alexander remains at Wake Medical Center in the cardiothoracic unit. Two other passengers in the Alexander vehicle were treated at Wake Medical Center and released.
Mr. Talton suffered only minor injuries. He was arrested and charged with driving while impaired and reckless driving.
In North Carolina a negligent driver who is also driving recklessly and under the influence of alcohol would be liable to the victims for punitive damages an well as compensatory damages.
