Pickup Truck Slams Into Back of Loaded School Bus

Brent AdamsOctober 10, 2007 11:00 PMApproximately 25 students in the Coats-Erwin middle School in North Carolina sought medical attention after the bus in which they were riding to school was rear-ended by a pickup truck.
The collision occurred near Erwin, North Carolina on Red Hill Church Road near the intersection of Ash Avenue at about 7:10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2007.
The Dunn, North Carolina Daily Record reported that the bus had stopped to pick up a student who was still on her front porch when the collision occurred.
The driver of the pickup truck, whose identity was not released by law enforcement officers, was taken to the hospital. The extent of her injuries was not known.
Firefighters and rescue workers treated injured students at the scene of the collision. Some students were placed on back boards and taken by ambulance to the hospital.
After the collision the front end of the pickup truck was crushed and wedged under the bus.
The driver of the bus, Mary Mc Coy , was praised for her good driving by Coats-Erwin Principal Whit Bradham and by parents who came to the scene soon after the collision.
This latest school bus collision demonstrates the need for mandatory seat belts in school buses.
