According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, death from drunk drivers increased in twenty-two states during 2006. There were 13,470 deaths from drunk driving nationwide in 2006. This number is down only slightly from the 13,582 deaths that occurred from drunk drivers in 2005.
In 2006, Texas led the country with the most deaths from drunk drivers (1,354 in 2006). This was 34 more deaths from drunk drivers than occurred in 2005.
Arizona and Kansas joined Texas as the three states with the greatest increase in drunk driving deaths during 2006 compared with those who died in 2005.
Utah, Kansas, and Iowa had the largest percentage increase of deaths in 2006 compared with 2005.
Nationwide, the total number of deaths involving drivers and motorcycle operators with any amount of alcohol in their blood was 17,602. This was up from 17,590 who died in 2005.
