Brent AdamsDecember 11, 2007 10:02 PMMany children in the United States are injured as a result of their rubber shoes being caught in escalators. One popular brand known as "Crocs," swept across America being marketed as shoes that were "comfortable, cool, and molded to your feet," as their website says. Personal injury attorneys in Toledo, Ohio have seen many injuries that have occurred from accidents on elevators and escalators, especially many to children.
According to CCN, more and more children have been getting their feet trapped in the escalator stairs as a result of the shoes being trapped between the step of the escalator and the sidewall of the moving stairwell.
Escalators can be very dangerous.
The results of these accidents are cuts and gashes along the feet, the ripping off of toenails, and ankles and feet receiving being twisted or sprained.
Though the number of the 10,000 escalator-related emergency room visits every year resulting from shoes being trapped is unknown, the Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that children not wear slip-on type shoes. As young children have a tendency to jump and move around, their risk of an accident is increased.
Children should not be unattended while riding an escalator and the parent should hold the child's hand while going both up and down the escalator. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that children face forward and remain as still as possible while holding the handrail.
Parents should also make themselves aware of any untied shoelaces, loose drawstrings, or any other loose items that have a potential of being caught.
