Men and women who have become disabled while on active duty serving in the U.S. military are receiving 'expedited processing' of disability claims from Social Security. The expedited process is for those members of the U.S. military who were disabled on or after the date of October 1, 2001, no matter where the disability occurred. Benefits can be applied for and received by those in the military even while they are receiving military pay.

Michael Astrue, Social Security Commissioner, assures the men and women of the U.S. Military that they will not have to wait to receive their benefits. He stated that the expedited processing is a way for Social Security to show their appreciation of their service in the military.

Once taken, the application for benefits from Social Security disability is uniquely identified as being from a member of the U.S. military. It is then expedited through all of the processing phases, both in Social Security and the state Disability Determination Service.

Military personnel that have been disabled can apply for benefits from disability at any time while in active service, or after discharge, whether they are still in the hospital, in a rehabilitation program, or receiving out-patient treatment in a military of civilian medical facility.

The Social Security Administration has set up a special web page for military personnel to apply for social security disability benefits.
