Two Nebraska women are warning those retired, on disability, or otherwise to be careful of phone calls from individuals claiming to be from the Social Security Administration.

According to Gina Slavik, she took one such call and as a result, ended up losing money.

Slavik referred to the individual she received the phone call from as "smooth." He called her with the message that she was owed a refund on her disability check. He claimed that the SSA had noticed that Slavik had not received her disability increase for 2007 and that they would correct it by depositing the difference in her account.

Slavik, as a regular recipient of checks from Social Security, believed the call to be legitimate, especially because he seemed to know a great deal about her. She said he knew such information as her address, her phone number, where she did her banking, and even the first few digits of her account number at her bank. Slavik verified the rest of the information and awaited deposit of the promised refund. However, instead of having money deposited in her account, money was stolen from it.

According to Dina White, she also received the same strange phone call. However, unlike Slavik, White was not fooled.

According to White, she placed a call to her bank to put a stop on everything on her account, which they promptly complied with.

According to the real Social Security Administration, the matter is under investigation by the inspector general. They also offered the following tips:

• Do not give your personal information to anyone over the telephone unless you were the one to call them.
• Be certain that you are actually speaking to the SSA
• SSA will not send e-mails asking for your account information to be verified
• Do not respond to such requests. Instead, you should contact the your local SSA office.
