Emergency responders in Nebraska who suffer mental illness after they witness a violent act should make no plans of receiving benefits from workers’ compensation.

On Thursday, April 10, Nebraska state lawmakers changed positions, voting down a bill (LB1082) which would have allowed police officers, firefighters, and other emergency employees who play witness to violent acts to become eligible for benefits from workers’ compensation.

The second-round vote that killed the bill was just three days after it received first-round approval from state lawmakers.

The bill had significantly been watered down since its introduction. Under a previous incarnation of the bill, any employee, not just emergency workers, who witness a violent act and suffered mental illness as a result would have been eligible to receive benefits from workers’ compensation.
